§ Jacqui SmithThe Department is in the process of consulting on the shape and content of revised sex and relationships education guidance. This will make it clear that it is for the governing body, in consultation with parents, to develop a policy on sex and relationships education, and to determine whether material used in schools is appropriate to the age of the pupils and in accordance with the PSHE framework, and the law which states that materials produced by health authorities often have a specific purpose of treating or preventing the spread of disease and schools need specifically to address the appropriateness of such material within a school context, again consulting with parents on its use.
