To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps are being taken to improve postal services in Scotland; and if he will make a statement. [118142]

Mr. Wilson

This Government remain determined to ensure that the Post Office is better equipped to serve all its customers in every part of the country, as signalled in the Postal Services Bill.

The Government are also committed to helping the Post Office to meet the changing needs of its customers. All post offices, including those in Scotland, will benefit from the £480 million computerisation programme due to be completed by 2001.
