§ Mr. SpellarWe have not received a request from the US regarding the use of facilities in the UK as part of the proposed US National Missile Defence system, nor would we expect any until after a US decision on whether or not to proceed with deployment of such a system. We would consider such a request carefully, taking account of any implications for UK defence.

Friend the Secretary of State for Defence has discussed the issue with representatives of the US Administration on a number of occasions, including during recent talks with US Defense Secretary Cohen and others in Washington between 24 and 27 January 2000, and with US Deputy Defense Secretary Harare in London on 21 March 2000.
