HC Deb 26 October 1999 vol 336 cc831-4W
Mr. Lidington

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state, in respect of each prison and young offenders institution, the number of prosecutions which have been brought against inmates for assault on prison officers in each year from 1992 to date. [94913]

Mr. Boateng

The information is not held centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost. However, information on prosecutions for assault is now being collected and will be available in future years.

The Prison Service collects centrally information on the numbers of proven charges of assault at adjudications under the Prison Rules, and the available information is set out in the table. These figures relate to assaults on staff of all grades, not solely prison officers, together with any assaults on others excluding prisoners, such as contractors or visitors.
