HC Deb 19 October 1999 vol 336 cc509-10W
Mr. Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, pursuant to his answer of 19 July 1999,Official Report, column 387, on new homes built in Lancashire in 1998, how many were built on (a) brownfield sites and (b) greenfield sites. [93673]

Ms Beverley Hughes

The information requested is not available. Estimates of the proportion of new homes built on previously developed land are available from the Department's Land Use Change Statistics, for Government Office Regions but not yet for counties. Latest figures show that, in 1994, 57 per cent. of new dwellings were built on previously developed land in the north-west, and 43 per cent. were built on land that was not previously developed. These figures exclude new dwellings provided from conversion of existing buildings, for which reliable information is not available below national level.

Estimates of the number of houses built are available from the Department's housing completion statistics at county level, but these do not distinguish houses built on greenfield and brownfield land.

These sources are under review and will be developed to provide more detailed, timely information.
