To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how much maintenance is paid to families in receipt of Family Credit. [94049]

As at May 1999, there were a total of 790,000 families receiving Family Credit, of which 131,000 were receiving maintenance. The average amount of maintenance in payment was £32.85 a week.

Family Credit was replaced by the new Working Families Tax Credit on 5 October.
