To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the nature and purpose of the technology audit of the defence research programme which was discussed at the Defence Research Committee on 31 March 1998; when this audit was started and ended; what were the conclusions of this audit; and if he will place a copy of the report arising out of this audit in the Library. Since about 1991, the Defence Scientific Staff, in providing support for the work of the Defence Research Committee, have undertaken an ongoing review of technology aspects of the defence research programme. The paper entitled "technology audit", discussed at the Committee on the 31 March 1998, dealt with the internal processes by which this ongoing review is carried out. I am withholding this document in accordance with exemption 2 of the "Code of Practice on Access to Government Information".
