Notes:

Scotland data for 1989 have been estimated. The total staff working in maternity is known for this year but the proportion of staff who were registered midwives is unknown. It is estimated that in 1989 95 per cent of maternity staff had a midwifery qualification. Scotland data comprise hospital and community midwives and combined duty nurses working in midwifery.

Reliable estimates of the numbers of nursing staff employed in specific occupational groups such as midwives are not available for 1989 and 1994 for Wales.

Northern Ireland figures are March 1990 (the earliest available) and March 1994. They comprise the number of staff at midwife or student midwife grades, and may include bank staff or those on temporary contracts.

Figures are rounded to the nearest 10.

Due to rounding, totals may not equal the sum of component parts.

— = not available.
