225WLetter from John Deas to Mr. Andrew Welsh, dated 26 November 1999
I am replying to your question to the Secretary of State for Defence as this matter falls within my area of responsibility. You ask that we state the current value of contracts for uniforms held with companies in Scotland, the United Kingdom, and in total.
The Agency responsible for the procurement of all clothing items for the Armed Forces is the Defence Clothing and Textiles Agency (DCTA) at Caversfield in Oxfordshire. It is assumed that by "uniforms" you are referring to all clothing worn by our Armed Forces in the course of their operational and ceremonial duties (but not Personal Protective Clothing) and we have therefore provided the values of contracts for these items.
DCTA have available the figures for such contracts which have been placed this Financial Year i.e. since I April 99, and these are as follows:
I regret these values do not include some large, long-term contracts in existence before 1 April 1999. To determine these figures would take a great deal of time and effort. However, you may wish to be aware that figures for 1998/99 indicated that around 73% by value of DCTA clothing contracts were awarded to UK firms, leaving 27% to overseas firms.
£ million Total value of contracts placed 13.039 Value of contracts to UK 12.759 (Of which to Scottish companies 1.394) Value of contracts outside UK 0.280 I trust this answer furnishes the information which you require.
