As agreed with my hon. Friend, the information is given in the following table, by region, for the 20 largest recipients of British development assistance and Belize. The countries have been ranked according to expenditure in 1997–98, the most recent year for which figures are available.

In line with our Country Strategy Paper of October 1998, which reflects the White Paper on International Development, DFID bilateral assistance pays particular attention to the social, governance and environmental aspects of the transition.
