To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what estimate he has made of the number of advanced skills teachers who will be in post in each of the next five years. [97845]

Ms Estelle Morris

Estimates have not been made for each of the next five years, but it is planned to expand the number of advanced skills teachers to about 10,000 in the longer term.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many advanced skills teachers are currently in post; and if he will give a breakdown of the number of advanced skills teachers in(a) each local education authority and (b) each education action zone in (i) primary and (ii) secondary schools. The information is not yet available. Detailed information for January 2000 is being collected from local authorities and should be available by April 2000.
