HC Deb 10 November 1999 vol 337 c538W
Mr. Clappison

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment further to the letter of 30 September from the Minister of State for Education, if he will list the interested parties involved in consultation about the future of A-level photography; and how many consultees were in favour of abolishing A-level photography. [97933]

Mr. Wicks

Photography A-level has not been abolished. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority recommended last year that photography should continue to be offered in the context of A-level art and design rather than as a stand-alone title because of concerns about the range, scope and demand of the existing A-level photography specification. This recommendation—which Ministers have now endorsed—followed extensive consultation with the awarding bodies, which are responsible for developing and offering the qualifications.

I understand that the QCA is currently reviewing the position of photography within the qualifications framework as a whole in consultation with a wide range of interested parties.
