HC Deb 10 November 1999 vol 337 cc669-70W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment he has made of the practicability of setting up a separate meat and livestock commission in Wales answerable to the National Assembly. [97812]

Ms Quin

None; we know that the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) is very conscious of the needs of its Welsh levy payers when drawing up its plans. A Welsh Council of the MLC has now been established in response to Devolution. During the recent quinnquennial review of the MLC there was no pressure from Welsh farmers for a separate MLC type body in Wales.

Ms Quin

The Government are committed to promoting informed consumer choice. We are pressing for improvements in Labelling rules, at EU level, including full disclosure of major allergens and mandatory, user-friendly nutrition labelling. At a national level we have recently published revised draft guidance notes aimed at ensuring that origin indications on foods are clear and not misleading. In the longer term, we will be seeking changes to labelling rules at European and International level to ensure that information given to consumers about the origin of the foods is clear and unambiguous.
