HC Deb 10 November 1999 vol 337 c662W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what guidance his Department issues aimed at increasing awareness of the recognition and treatment of epilepsy in(a) schools and colleges and (b) the workplace. [97468]

Jacqui Smith

I have been asked to reply.

The Department for Education and Employment and the Department of Health have jointly produced "Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs", a good practice guide for schools. This includes specific reference to epilepsy, its medication and control. "Wired for Health" (www.wiredforhealth.gov.uk), the website of the Government's Healthy Schools Programme, also provides information on epilepsy through a link to the British Epilepsy Association's website. This is primarily for schools and colleges but has a wider audience including other workplaces.
