HC Deb 10 November 1999 vol 337 cc647-8W
Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much his Department spent on external consultants and advisers in each of the last four financial years. [97415]

Miss Melanie Johnson

The Treasury has spent the following amounts on consultants and advisers since 1996–97.

Year £
1996–97 923,662
1997–98 976,971
1998–99 1,757,400
1999–2000 to date 1,053,758

The increase in consultancies in 1998–99 is mainly the result of the transfer to the Treasury of DTI's Insurance Directorate and the creation of the Debt Management Office (which combined accounted for approximately £950,000).
