Whether they will list those cases of confirmed new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD) which have been diagnosed in the United Kingdom, indicating in each case the age, sex and area of residence of the patient, the date of diagnosis and the date of death. [HL4297]

†At present there are no fully validated criteria for the diagnosis of vCJD before death. For most cases confirmation of the cause of death is ascertained by neuroathological examination of the brain post-mortem. A few cases have been confirmed through brain biopsy whilst the patient is still alive.
*Cases not confirmed neuropathologically and therefore classed as 'probable vCJD'
