HC Deb 04 November 1999 vol 337 c309W
Mr. Webb

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will estimate the effects on the number of pensioners receiving income support of an increase of 75p in the basic state pension coupled with an increase of £3 in the income support level, together with similar proportionate increases in the rates for older pensioners and married persons. [96023]

Mr. Rooker

We estimate that 30,000 pensioners would become newly entitled to the minimum income guarantee if benefit rates were amended in this way.

Notes:

  1. 1. "Pensioners" refers to single people aged 60 or over or couples or partners where one is 60 or over.
  2. 2. All estimates are derived from the 1999–2000 PSM model based on the 1996–67 FRS uprated to 1999–2000 prices with IS administrative adjustments.
  3. 3. Figures exclude cases in residential care and nursing homes.
  4. 4. Estimates are rounded to the nearest 5,000 cases.
