HC Deb 13 May 1999 vol 331 c206W
24. Mr. Chaytor

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has to enable companies to make Intrastat returns electronically. [83212]

Dawn Primarolo

Companies have been able to submit Intrastat returns using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) since the start of the Single Market on 1 January 1993. This allowed companies to send in their data on floppy disk, tape or via the Value Added Network.

In December 1998 two further methods of submitting Intrastat data electronically were introduced using the internet. A third method of submitting data via the internet, of particular benefit to smaller companies, will be considered later this year.
