To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimate he has made of the costs of the introduction of his land reform proposals. [77750]

Mr. Macdonald

I am satisfied that the overall package of proposals for land reform which we launched on 5 January will benefit the people of Scotland.

The cost of introducing our land reform recommendations will depend on the result of further technical development of the proposals, which is ongoing.

From 1 July 1999 this will be a matter for the Scottish Parliament.
