HC Deb 25 March 1999 vol 328 c386W
Helen Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received on the possible registration of CCTV surveillance systems with the police; and if he will make a statement. [78489]

Mr. Boateng

We have no plans to require public space Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to be registered with the police.

The Data Protection Act 1998 will provide a framework for the statutory regulation of public space CCTV systems. Controllers of such systems will have to notify details of their processing to the Data Protection Commissioner and comply with a set of enforceable principles of good information handling practice, including the need for personal data to be processed fairly and lawfully.
