§ Ms QuinConsiderable progress on human rights has been made in Romania since the overthrow of the Communist regime in 1989. The UK is satisfied that Romania now adheres to modern European standards of human rights in respect of democracy, the rule of law and protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens. In certain areas, such as the administration of justice, the elimination of corruption and the treatment of minorities and the disadvantaged, further improvement is needed. The UK welcomes the movement towards greater protection of human rights in Romania and seeks to support this process.
