HC Deb 24 March 1999 vol 328 c285W
18. Mr. Thompson

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what estimate she has made of the total compensation payable as a result of the Omagh bomb. [76696]

Mr. Ingram

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Compensation Agency and I understand from the chief executive that the information is as follows.

Compensation for death or injury in such circumstances is payable under the Criminal Injuries (Compensation) (Northern Ireland) Order 1988. The Agency anticipates that approximately £9 million is likely to be paid in respect of the victims of the Omagh bomb.

Loss or damage to property in such circumstances is payable under The Criminal Damage (Compensation) (Northern Ireland) Order 1977. The current estimate is that approximately £8 million is likely to be paid for damage caused to buildings, their contents and to vehicles.
