To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate on the basis of the forecast interest rates used in the Inland Revenue Press Release IR2,202W the average income tax relief cost per borrower as a result of his proposal to abolish mortgage interest relief in 2000–01. [77129]

As the Chancellor noted in his Budget statement, mortgage interest relief is worth an average of £2.50 a week.
