HC Deb 22 March 1999 vol 328 cc63-4W
Mr. Jack

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what timetable the fifth committee of the United Nations is following in preparing its proposals to improve the arrangements for the future financing of the organisation; and when its proposals will next be discussed by the General Assembly.[77628]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

The fifth committee of the United Nations is currently considering the future financing of the United Nations and should make recommendations to the General Assembly for its consideration before the end of 1999. On 16 March, the European Union Presidency delegate to the fifth committee again pressed European Union proposals, originally developed by the United Kingdom and France, to put United Nations finances on a more secure and equitable long-term footing.
