HC Deb 22 March 1999 vol 328 cc38-9W
Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what discussions she had with the Chief Constable of the RUC before deciding not to appoint either of the two short-listed candidates as the new Independent Police Ombudsman. [77630]

Mr. Ingram

None. The Secretary of State and I interviewed two candidates and, while we found them to be of a high standard, we felt that they did not sufficiently meet the requirements we had set for this extremely sensitive and important post.

Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if the Chief Constable of the RUC has a veto on the appointment of the Independent Police Ombudsman. [77631]

Mr. Ingram

No.
