HC Deb 19 March 1999 vol 327 cc576-7W
Mr. Maclean

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will make a statement on the Government's policy towards the European Community strategy on climate change. [76193]

Mr. Meacher

[holding answer 12 March 1999]: The UK plays a leading role in developing and arguing the Community's position in international negotiations on climate change.

Within the Community, the UK brokered the agreement reached in June 1998 sharing out the EU' s 8 per cent. reduction target from Kyoto, under which the UK took on a share of -12.5 per cent. The UK Presidency also brokered a set of key agreed areas where policies and measures at Community level were called for to support action taken by Member States to meet their targets.
