§ Mr. McLeish[holding answer 16 March 1999]Each local authority in Scotland is responsible for setting its own budget. The Scottish Office provides funding to authorities through Aggregate External Finance (AEF) in support of their net current expenditure. The table shows AEF funding at cash and constant 1998–99 prices by local authority for 1995–96 to 1999–2000. The distribution of AEF at a local authority level for 2000–01 and 2001–02 is not yet decided, but overall support for local authority expenditure for each of these years is planned to increase by 3.0 per cent. and 2.7 per cent. respectively.
