HC Deb 15 March 1999 vol 327 c549W
Mr. Sawford

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what quantity of meat and bonemeal and other high-protein feed products was exported from Britain in each of the last three years of a type which would currently be illegal if used for animal feed in Great Britain. [75837]

Mr. Rooker

Such feed products are not separately identified in official Overseas Trade Statistics.

Within the UK the feeding of mammalian meat and bonemeal to all farmed livestock and the feeding of any mammalian protein (with certain specific exceptions) to ruminants is prohibited. Since February 1996 the State Veterinary Service has conducted a feed sampling programme to monitor compliance with these controls. Two breaches of the feed control legislation have been identified though neither case involved the export of prohibited material.

In addition mammalian meat and bonemeal of UK origin, and animal feed containing it, is included in the EU export ban which came into force in March 1996. No breaches of this ban have been detected.
