HC Deb 09 March 1999 vol 327 cc149-50W
36. Mr. Austin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will set out his priorities for road improvements and public transport improvements to achieve the regeneration potential of the Thames Gateway. [73448]

Mr. Caborn

The main public transport priority to achieve the regeneration potential of the Thames Gateway remains the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. More localised public transport projects, in association with the major developments, should bring benefits throughout the Gateway.

Key priorities for roads are improvements to the A2, providing enhanced access to Kent Thames-side, one of the two main centres for development in the Thames Gateway, and a second Swale crossing to the Isle of Sheppey.
