§ Mr. MacleanTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (1) what progress his Department has made on a comprehensive scheme for speed cameras throughout England and Wales; and if he will make a statement; [73661]
(2) if he will estimate the potential reduction in road deaths if 7,000 speed cameras were installed in England and Wales. [73660]
§ Dr. ReidThe siting of speed enforcement cameras is an operational matter for chief officers of police and their local traffic authorities. My Department issues advice on the deployment of speed enforcement cameras in Circular Roads 4/90. That advice makes clear that, in order to maximise their benefit, cameras should be placed at sites with a history of speed-related accidents. Information about the number of cameras in use is not kept centrally. It is not possible, therefore, to estimate fatality reductions resulting from camera use.
