HL Deb 04 March 1999 vol 597 cc206-7WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the cost of maintaining the European Union presence in Somaliland in the current financial year, and the budgeted cost in 1999–2000; and what are the objectives of this mission.[HL1200]

Baroness Amos

The European Commission does not have any resident representation in Somaliland. Somalia is handled from Nairobi. We do not have information on the cost of this operation.

Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about the European Union project for the reconstruction of two bridges on the road from Berbera to Hargeisa, details of which are reported to have been agreed with the Ministry of Resettlement and Reconstruction in Somaliland in the spring of 1998; and what further assistance is being given to the authorities in Somaliland in repairing the infrastructure of the territory and the institutions of civil society. [HL1199]

Baroness Amos

The EC's rehabilitation programmes for Somalia total 85 million euros (some £59.5 million). We understand that the reconstruction of the two bridges is funded bilaterally by the Government of Denmark.
