HC Deb 04 March 1999 vol 326 cc859-60W
17. Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what recent representations he has received from the transport and road haulage industry about tax on fuel. [72429]

Ms Hewitt

The Government have received a number of representations from the Road Haulage industry about the tax on fuel. Representations have been received directly from the Freight Transport Association, the Road Haulage Association and the Automobile Association. In addition many haulage operators have written to their Members of Parliament who have passed the letters on to Government Ministers.

All of the representations received will be carefully considered in the run up to the Budget on 9 March and it would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this stage.

20. Mr. Ian Bruce

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment he has made of the effect of the fuel tax escalator on the viability of the UK transport industry. [72433]

Ms Hewitt

The viability and competitiveness of the UK transport industry is taken into account when setting road fuel duty rates.

As set out in Table K2 of the Customs and Excise Annual Report, receipts from duty on motor fuels for the previous three years were £15,436 million in 1995–96, £16,928 million in 1996–97 and £19,246 million in 1997–98.
