HL Deb 04 March 1999 vol 597 cc198-9WA
Lord Moynihan

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What position they intend to take on China's human rights record at the 55th annual United Nations Commission on Human Rights when it meets in Geneva from 22 March to 30 April 1999, in the light of recent detention and sentencing of pro-democracy activists in China. [HL1154]

Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean

We have not yet decided our position on China at the UNCHR. We are discussing this with our EU partners. China's recent actions against pro-democracy activists are unacceptable. We will continue to condemn these publicly, including at the UNCHR.
