To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) when he expects to make a decision about the lifting of the ban on beef on the bone; [68105]

(2) what is the current advice he has received from the Chief Medical Officer on the safety of beef on the bone. [68059]

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will publish the advice of the Chief Medical Officer on the safety of beef on the bone in each of the last three years. [68060]

Mr. Nick Brown

The advice to Ministers on this matter, given by the then Chief Medical Officer, Sir Kenneth Calman, on 3 December 1997, was the subject of a Department of Health Press Release issued on 5 December 1997. Further advice from his successor, Professor Liam Donaldson, was given in a memorandum on 18 January and published on 4 February. Both the Department of Health Press Release and the memorandum are available in the Library of the House.
