Ms Hewitt

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the Director of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from John Fox to Liz Blackman, dated 29 June 1999: The Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has been asked to reply to your recent question on the number of deaths resulting from last winter's influenza epidemic. I am replying in Dr Holt's absence. Between December 1998 and March 1999, the provisional number of deaths where the underlying cause of death was certified as due to influenza, using the International Classification of Diseases, was 529.
