Mr. Stinchcombe

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) of the defendants who exercised their right to elect jury trial in 1998, how many were(a) acquitted in the Crown Court of all the charges against them, (b) convicted in the Crown Court following a jury trial and (c) convicted in the Crown Court on pleas of guilty and without going to jury trial; [86909]

  1. (2) in respect of the most recent period for which information is available, what proportions of defendants tried in the Crown Court following election for jury trial were (a) acquitted, or otherwise not convicted, in relation to all of the charges against them, (b) convicted, following jury trial, on all or some of the charges against them and (c) convicted, following pleas of guilty, and without going to jury trial, on all or some of the charges against them; [86960]
  2. (3) in respect of the most recent period for which information is available, what proportions of defendants convicted in the Crown Court following an election for jury trial were (a) convicted on all of the same charges with which they were originally charged and (b) convicted of fewer or lesser charges than those with which they were originally charged. [86961]
