To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, pursuant to his answer of 21 May 1999,Official Report, column 474, on the New Deal for Young People, when he expects to be able to provide the number of New Deal trainees in various sectors of industry. [85559]

[holding answer 8 June 1999]Improved information on the number of New Deal job starts by employers should be available by October, depending on progress on upgrading the Labour Market System. For the longer term, the Employment Service is working with its IT supplier to enhance further the full range of its management information systems.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is the(a) median and (b) average length of time spent on the Gateway of the New Deal for 18 to 24-year-olds by those for whom no eventual destination is known. [85863]

Mr. Andrew Smith

For the period ending March 1999 the median length of time spent on the New Deal Gateway by those young people who leave for an unknown destination is 71 days. The mean average length of time is 85 days.
