To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what increase or decrease in the amount of energy used per annum in providing street lighting nationally has occurred since(a) 1980, (b) 1985, (c) 1990 and (d)1995. [93347]

Total electricity supplied for use in public lighting in the United Kingdom and the percentage changes in the quantity used are shown in the following table:

Mr. Battle

In 1997 total electricity supplied for use in public lighting in the United Kingdom amounted to 2,679 GW hours. Figures are not available for built up areas separately.
