Notes:

  1. 1. Numbers are rounded to the nearest hundred and displayed as thousands. Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number.
  2. 2. Estimates are based on a 5 per cent, sample of all Income Support and Jobseeker's Allowance claimants and will therefore be subject to a degree of sampling error eg the true population value for an estimate of 2,000 could lie within the range of approximately 1,500 to 2,500.
  3. 3. Children are defined as dependants aged 15 years old and less.
  4. 4. Adults refer to all adult beneficiaries of Income Support or Jobseeker's Allowance i.e. Claimants, partners and dependants aged 16 years old and over.
  5. 5. Cases are allocated to the Local Authority Districts by matching postcodes against the 1999 version 1 of the Postcode Directory.
  6. 6. Cases were allocated to Edmonton Constituency by matching postcodes against the 1999 version 1 of the Postcode Directory and as such represent Constituency boundaries as at May 1997.
  7. 7. Estimates for Jobseeker's Allowance include income-based, contribution-based Jobseeker's Allowance and cases where nil benefit is in payment.
  8. 8. Population estimates used in the percentage calculation were taken from the Office for National Statistics mid year estimates for 1997.
  9. 9. It has not been possible to provide an estimate of the percentage of the population in the Edmonton constituency area who are beneficiaries of either Income Support or Jobseeker's Allowance. Instead, data has been provided for Enfield Local Authority.
  10. 10. Estimates for the United Kingdom can not be provided as requested, as social security in Northern Ireland is the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, but Great Britain totals have been supplied.
