HC Deb 27 July 1999 vol 336 c220W
Mr. Lidington

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department what is the current backlog of adjudication appeals in immigration cases. [92895]

Mr. Vaz

When a case is received from the Home Office, a first hearing usually takes place within six weeks of receipt, and notice of this is sent out to the parties within five working days. If the appeal cannot be dealt with at the first hearing, it is adjourned and directions given for its progress to a second hearing, which usually takes place within a further six weeks. 1,303 appeals are currently at various stages of progress but there is no backlog, as the Immigration Appellate Authority is currently meeting all its targets.
