HC Deb 27 July 1999 vol 336 cc360-1W
Joan Ruddock

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, pursuant to his answer of 16 June 1999,Official Report, columns 192-93, on genetically modified foods, if the feeding studies on animals over the period 1994 to 1996 used crops treated with Round-up; and if he will make a statement. [92106]

Mr. Rooker

Following an extensive compositional analysis of Monsanto's genetically modified soya beans, the ACNFP concluded that treatment with glyphosate did not alter the composition of the soya beans themselves. The only difference seen when the GM soya beans are treated with glyphosate is a slightly greater level of the metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid. The toxicity of glyphosate and its metabolites have been studied as part of the approval process for glyphosate and shown to be of low toxicity to humans. The ACNFP was thus satisfied that the safety of Monsanto's GM soya beans had been fully characterised and that the sacrifice of further animals in additional feeding studies using glyphosate treated soya beans was therefore unnecessary.

Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has received on the effects of broad-spectrum herbicides applied to growing genetically modified crops; and how many research projects commissioned in the United Kingdom by his Department are currently under way to investigate the potential risks of genetically modified organisms. [92706]

Mr. Rooker

MAFF has received numerous representations from individuals and organisations concerning the use of broad-spectrum herbicides in the cultivation of genetically modified crops. Views have varied from those who support the technology for the potential benefits it can bring to those who express concern over the possible environmental or human health effects of the use of pesticides on such crops.

At present there are 29 MAFF-Commissioned projects (costing £1.7 million in 1999–2000) investigating food safety issues and possible risks to the environment arising from the introduction of genetically modified organisms.

Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what recent reports he has received from the United States Department of Agriculture on(a) the yields of genetically modified crops grown in the United States and (b) the number of cases of spray drift damage to adjoining non-genetically modified crops. [92633]

Mr. Rooker

I have received no such reports from the US Department of Agriculture.

Joan Ruddock

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans SCIMAC has to review their guidelines for separation distances between GM and non-GM crops; and if he will make a statement. [92395]

Mr. Rooker

I understand that SCIMAC expect to review all the documentation describing their stewardship programme for the introduction of GM crops, including separation distances, at least once a year. Changes to the guidelines could also be made at any other time if information becomes available which would significantly affect the advice given.
