HC Deb 26 July 1999 vol 336 c83W
Joan Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many professors were appointed to university posts in(a) 1997–98 and (b) 1998–99, broken down by (i) gender and (ii) ethnicity. [92511]

Mr. Mudie

The available data include those entering their current Higher Education Institution on appointment as professors either on promotion or as a result of a move from a professorial post elsewhere. Those gaining professorial rank within their existing institution are therefore excluded.

Figures for the two most recent years are shown in the table.
