To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what plans he has to encourage competitive sport within schools. [91360]

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what contribution the national lottery is making to encourage the playing of competitive sporting fixtures in schools. [91365]

Mr. Banks

We are well aware of the value of encouraging competitive games both within and between schools. As well as being one of the criteria schools have to meet to be awarded a Sportsmark, we have asked Sport England to ensure that arranging inter-school competitive fixtures is a key part of the job description of the new Active Schools Co-ordinators. This initiative will be supported by £30 million from the Lottery Sports Fund.
