HC Deb 20 July 1999 vol 335 c468W
Mr. Ben Chapman

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what measures she intends to take to improve the situation in Somalia with regard to(a) food, (b) seeds and (c) health assistance. [91296]

Clare Short

To date, we have committed £590,000 to emergency needs, including support for UNICEF's supplementary feeding programmes in the Bardera region; Action Contre le Faim's (ACF) emergency nutritional intervention in the Gedo and Bakool regions; and World Vision's primary health care project in Juba. We are currently considering providing support for the African Medical and Research Foundation to improve the health of internally displaced people in Luuq Town, South West Somalia, which will complement ACF's activities. In addition, the EC have provided 10,899 metric tonnes of food.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to respond to needs as they arise.
