To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his answer of 5 July 1999,Official Report, column 359, on compensation, how much compensation has been paid to customers in respect of inconvenience they have suffered as a result of NIRS2 delays. [91185]

[holding answer 13 July 1999]: I have been asked to reply.

By 30 June 1999, the Benefits Agency has paid £1,802,090 compensation to customers in respect of inconvenience they have suffered as a result of NIRS2 delays.

The total compensation payments will not be known until the National Insurance Contributions Office (NICO) and the Benefits Agency (BA) have fully recovered backlogs.
