To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what was the amount of special needs provision(a) nationally and (b) in Gloucestershire in terms of children with (i) moderate learning difficulties, (ii) severe learning difficulties and (iii) emotional and behavioural difficulties, in the most recent year for which figures are available. The latest available data drawn from Annual Schools' Census returns relates to January 1998. The number of children with a statement of special educational needs nationally is 242,294 and in Gloucestershire 2,539. Information is not collected centrally by type of special need.
