HC Deb 05 July 1999 vol 334 c386W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the President of the Council if she will make a statement on the Government's response to the Law Commission recommendation for parliamentary procedural reform to facilitate scrutiny of law reform Bills. [87779]

Mrs. Beckett

I met the Chairman of the Law Commission on 22 June, after publication of the 33rd annual report, to discuss the enactment of Law Commission Bills. There are already special procedures in both Houses for such Bills, but modernisation of parliamentary procedures may in time create other opportunities for their scrutiny. The Government attach great importance to the work of the Law Commission. Where the Government do accept that the Commission's proposals merit legislation, we will seek to make the best use of available parliamentary time and procedures.
