HC Deb 05 July 1999 vol 334 cc404-5W
Mr. Willis

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what action he has taken to monitor the impact of equal opportunities legislation on recruitment, pay and promotion opportunities of(a) male, (b) female, (c) disabled and (d) ethnic minority university research and teaching staff; and what were the results of this monitoring. [89563]

Ms Hodge

The Government have promoted the recommendation of the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education (the Dearing Committee) that all higher education institutions should review their Equal Opportunities policies, and identify and remove barriers to recruitment and progression for particular groups. The Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals and the Commission on University Career Opportunity are advising institutions on equal opportunities policies and monitoring their implementation in the sector.
