To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what discussions have taken place with United States Government officials concerning the possibility of Britain meeting future US tritium requirements. [67212]

There are regular contacts and exchanges of information between the United States and the United Kingdom on nuclear matters under the aegis of the 1958 Agreement between the Governments of the United Kingdom and the United States on "Co-operation in the Use of Atomic Energy for Mutual Defence Purposes" Command 537 as amended. These contacts have included discussions on tritium requirements.

HMS Ark Royal is at present undergoing preservation by dehumidification and HMS Intrepid is currently on standby. Staffing levels of the two ships as at 1 January 1999 were as follows:
