HC Deb 27 January 1999 vol 324 cc291-2W
Mr. Rammell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer which measures of local deprivation his Department and its agencies use in considering allocation of funds to local projects. [66722]

Mr. Milburn

The Departments for which the Chancellor is responsible are not in general involved in allocating funds to local projects.

Exceptions to this are the funds allocated through the Invest to Save Budget and the Capital Modernisation Fund, announced in the Comprehensive Spending Review. These funds are allocated by the Treasury on a competitive basis to projects proposed by departments, taking account of a range of published criteria. In addition, the Treasury Private Finance Initiative (PFI) Taskforce has a leading role in the Project Review Group that allocates support for local authority PFI projects.

In each case, local deprivation is taken into account for appropriate types of project, but no specific measure of local deprivation is used.
